Gearbox’s Borderlands movie was first announced in 2015 – a whopping six years ago. From that time until 2020, when Eli Roth was announced as director, the film remained in development limbo.
Since the 2020 announcement only a few things have come to light about the Lionsgate production. Firstly Cate Blanchett was announced to be joining the cast at the character Lilith, the “Siren” class character from the gaming franchise. The character is originally from the planet Dionysus and is one of six Sirens – a group of women with extraordinary powers!
This week Kevin Hart has also been announced as joining the project, this time as Roland. Roland is what is known as a “Soldier” class, and hails from the planet Promethea. He is a former soldier of Crimson Lance which is a highly skilled and privatised military of Atlas corporation
Aaron Berg and Craig Mazin have joined the production team as writers for the film. Mazin is famous for his work on the Chernobyl TV mini-series as well as entries in the Hangover and Scary Movie franchises. Eli Roth currently has 16 director roles to his name, including Hostel: Part II. With Mazin’s humour and Roth’s ability to supply some gore it should make for a good combination. Avi Arad and Ari Arad will join the production team alongside Erik Feig and Gearbox manager Randy Pitchford wil become the executive producer.
There is rumour, and this is confirmed on IMDb, that the movie will also contain a character from the spin-off game series Tales From The Borderlands.
The film is set to begin filming in Hungary, which was one of the initial countries to set up COVID-19 protection for their filming crews. This included frequent testing and bubbles. Let’s hope the filming is a success and the pandemic does turn the project into a clap-trap.
