Sonic the Hedgehog will be returning for a sequel and filming will begin in March 2021. This news comes after an interview with Tika Sumpter on “Live with Kelly and Ryan”.
Previously the only hint towards the movie was the Directors’ Guild of Canada giving the film a working title of Emerald Hill. This could be in reference to the more tropical-themed music of the legendary video game level. There is therefore a strong chance that viewers will see Sonic return to his homeworld, which seems more possible since Tika stated there is filming occurring in Hawaii.
Currently there is very little information about the Sonic the Hedgehog sequel although it is known that it will once again be directed by Jeff Fowler. Fans and media are speculating Jim Carrey, James Marsden and Ben Schwartz will all return to reprise their roles, but nothing has been confirmed. Although IMDb now have Ben Schwartz listed within the cast.
“I think it had been about five months that had passed since the first trailer. We had worked very hard on our updates to the character. It was definitely a little bit of like, ‘Oh man, what happens if they don’t like this?'”Jeff Fowler on the redesigning of the titular character
The original film was hit with some controversy before release due to the original animation design of the titular character. However, due to the fallout across the Internet the designers went back and redesigned the character from the red shoes up.
The film then made a commercial success of itself, making $100 million on the opening weekend. The movie was then rushed to streaming platforms amid the coronavirus pandemic.
