Two decades ago the original Microsoft Xbox was announced. Since then we have seen an amazing history with the company behind the challenger to PlayStation with recent years showing how Microsoft like to buy up developers for their growing Microsoft Game Studio’s powerhouse.
Recently Bloomberg published an in-depth oral history about the originals of the console. The most interestingly funny part of this history is that Microsoft, twenty years ago, were also looking for developers to work alongside the Xbox.
“We actually had Nintendo in our building in January 2000 to work through the details of a joint venture where we gave them all the technical specs of the Xbox. The pitch was their hardware stunk, and compared to Sony PlayStation, it did. So the idea was, “Listen, you’re much better at the game portions of it with Mario and all that stuff. Why don’t you let us take care of the hardware?” But it didn’t work out.”
Kevin Bachus explained that they had been sent to see if Nintendo were interested in being acquired. This is when he states “they just laughed their asses off.”
There were also earlier statements of how Microsoft were attempting to get Konami on board, as well as both Electronic Arts and Square who both said no. Another attempt to buy Midway, maker of Mortal Kombat, failed.
Regardless of all the negative responses from these giants in the video game market, no response is as great as being laughed out of the room throughout an hour-long meeting.
