Nintendo begins to wind-down services for Mario Maker on the Wii U

Nintendo of America has recently announced that Mario Maker, the popular Wii U title, will lose upload capabilities as of 31st March 2021.

The news will come as no surprise as the Wii U consoles did not perform well within their particular console generation as discussed in Console Yourself . Nintendo will also be looking at pushing more Switch sales as Super Mario Maker 2 is an ever increasingly popular title on their current platform.

Super Mario Maker launched 10 September 2015 in Japan, with North America and Europe having the launch a day later and Australia seeing the launch on 12th September of the same year. It was the second best-selling game in the UK in it’s first week of release and ended up as the fourth best-selling game for the Wii U as of 2012. Over 4 million copies were sold worldwide and the game went on to receive various awards and accolades for its originality and community engagement. A port for the game was also created for the Nintendo 3DS.
