The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that the Game of Thrones actor Bella Ramsey will be joining the cast of The Last of Us as Ellie. Shortly afterwards her Game of Thrones co-star, Pedro Pascal, was also revealed to be cast as Joel.
The television adaptation is being written by Craig Mazin, the creator of Chernobyl, with Neil Druckmann taking the role as executive producer. Druckmann was the creative director, as well as the writer for the critically acclaimed video game.
The Last of Us was developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony in 2013. Released on the PlayStation 3 it reached critical acclaim and sold more than 17 million copies on the PlayStation 3 and the PlayStation 4 where it was re-released as a remastered variant.
The Last of Us Part II was released in 2020 and became the most awarded game in history by one award Game of the Year award (perhaps Naughty Dog can thank the emergence of Fing’rs & Thu’ums for that?).
The story is set twenty years after a worldwide apocalyptic disaster whereby a human variant of Cordyceps has destroyed civilization. Joel has to smuggle Ellie across America in the hopes that Ellie may be the hope for humanity, containing a rare hope at vaccination. The journey takes various twists and brutal turns and creates a devastatingly heartbreaking story that hit the hearts of millions of gamers.
The television series will be co-produced by Sony Pictures Television as well as developer Naughty Dog.
