The Last of Us was developed in a crucial stage of development for Naughty Dog – for the first time in history the companies split into two teams so one could also develop Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception concurrently. Set after a 2013 outbreak of Cordyseps civilization becomes decimated by the infection. The player controls Joel, who is a smuggler that has been tasked to escort Ellie across the post-apocalyptic United States.

The game received an immensely positive reception. It has often been cited as the best video game of all time and in numerous reviews received 10/10. The game is believed to have now sold more than 20 million copies worldwide and was one of the best selling games on both the PlayStation 3 and the PlayStation 4 with the remastered edition of the game.

Scenery within the game was inspired by the non-fiction book The World Without Us by Alan Weisman. It explores what would happen to the natural and built environment if humans disappeared.
