God of War performed commercially well, selling 5 million copies within it’s first month. The game has scored on par with the original game of the series, making it one of the best rated games on the PlayStation 4 console. The game changed the environment of previous God of War titles, allowing Kratos to enter the world of Norse mythology. The game was originally intended to be set within an Ancient Egyptian setting before the developers decided that Norse Mythology was more fitting to the protagonist.
The game received numerous Game of the Year awards, and was nominated for many more accolades thereafter. The soundtrack was composed by Bear McCreary, who is known for his work on shows like Battlestar Galactica and The Walking Dead. During development Director Cory Barlog and Lead Level Designer Rob Davis were influenced by Resident Evil 4‘s camera positions and Resident Evil 7‘s “strong vision”. The camera distance was heavily debated during development but close-camera perspectives were ultimately decided on.
