Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is the fourth game in the Call of Duty series of games. The entries prior to this title were set in World War II, making this the first game to break away from that setting. The setting is in modern times, and follows the story of the execution of a president in the Middle East and an ultranationalist movement sparking civil war in Russia.
The game received critical acclaim, primarily for the gameplay and story. IGN praised it the best game on the Xbox 360, and within six years it sold 13 million copies. The game spurred two sequels Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in 2009 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 in 2011 as well as a remastered version of the original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered in 2016 and 2017.
