Hi Five – Top Five Video Game Weapons5 minute read

Jim Cullinane chooses his top five weapons to take into the battlefield.

This weeks edition of Hi Five explores the world of weaponry in video games where myself, Jim Cullinane – editor-in-chief at Fing’rs & Thu’ums, select my top five weapons. I have dug through my mind to remember the weapons I have used to create this Hi Five Video Game Weapons list for any traveller entering the realm of gaming.

Disclaimer – these are my top five and are in no way to be considered an official list.

5 The Wabberjack – The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Sheogorath, the Daedric Prince of Madness, from the realm of Obvlivion called The Shivering Isles or “The Asylums” by the Imperial Census of Daedra Lords gifts the Dragonborn the Wabberjack in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

The weapon has the power to turn its enemy into a pile of cheese, or cast fire, ice or even lightning attacks – all at random. However, beware spell-caster as, while it can cast fear into the heart of the enemy or even remove their armour, it can also increase your targets health, making them indestructible. If you want a powerful weapon, with some added chaos then this is the weapon for you!

4 The BFG9000 – Doom

In certain materials the name of this gun has been bowdlerized to mean “Big Friggin’ Gun” or “Big Fancy Gun”. In the 2005 movie Doom the gun was called “Bio Force Gun”, but the name actually stands for Big F**king Gun 9000.

The original design for this gun was from a RoarGun (a battery operated toy gun made by Creatoy), but don’t let that put you off. The BFG9000 shoots 40 cells of green plasma per shot, obliterating all in it’s path (mostly). The gun was first seen in Doom in 1994 and has since been seen in Doom 64, Doom RPG, Doom 3, Doom (2016) as well as Doom Eternal where you will once again find brute-force power that will make you unstoppable.

3 The Dagger of Time – The Prince of Persia

More than a weapon, the Dagger of Time is the only container besides the Hourglass that is strong enough to hold the Sands of Time. Whoever wields the Dagger is granted the power to control Time, by using up the Sands within.

If the control of time is what you seek then this is the blade for you. Small enough to not be cumbersome, yet powerful enough to reverse, stop or slow time this blade can also double as a sharpened weapon too. However, tampering with the natural progression of time can lead to confusing and traumatic memories, so beware all that wield this blade!

2 Knights of the Round – Final Fantasy VII

Anyone who has delved into the lore and immense gameplay that Final Fantasy VII has to offer will know of the mysterious Materia that is oft sought after. To obtain this brutally powerful Materia you must first aqcuire a Gold Chocobo. This can be done by breeding a black Chocobo with a wonderful yellow one. The wonderful yellow Chocobo can be obtained near Icicle Inn with a Zeio Nut. both black and wonderful yellow need 12 race wins between them for a 100% chance of a gold offspring.

Another way to obtain a gold Chocobo is to offer the Desert Rose to the Kalm traveler after defeating Ruby Weapon. Once acquired you can travel to Round Island, which is hidden in the northeast area of the map and uncharted. You may also acquire this Materia from the Kalm traveller after defeating Emerald Weapon. When summoned thirteen mediaeval knights individually attack the target using 250MP. The spell power is 5x the base magic damage meaning that one summon can deploy 129,987 of damage to a target, making it the single most powerful Materia in the game. The path to obtaining this weapon is long, but very much worth the effort.

1 The One Ring – Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle Earth II

“One ring to rule them all, one ring to find them, One ring to bring them all, and in the darkness bind them; In the Land of Mordor where the shadows lie.”

Surely this weapon needs no introduction. “In the land of Mordor, in the fires of Mount Doom, the Dark Lord Sauron forged in secret a master Ring, to control all others. And into this Ring he poured his cruelty, his malice and his will to dominate all life. One Ring to rule them all”. In The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle Earth II the one ring is an obtainable item. If you play the Evil Campaign then this item will give you the power to summon Sauron himself. Now, whilst he is incredibly overpowered in the game I must admit that the books and the films did sway me on making this the top precious, I mean weapon, in this edition of Hi Five.

What will next weeks Hi Five be about? Well you can decide. Send us your ideas via Facebook or Twitter and we will pick one at random, no matter how obscure they might be! And the creator will get a mention too.
